Exploring the Indigenous History of the Sunshine Coast

The Costa del Sol is a region in southeastern Queensland, Australia, that is home to the Kabi Kabi (Gabi Gabi) and Jinibara people. This area is rich in Aboriginal history and culture, and is a popular destination for tourists looking to explore its unique offerings. The Sunshine Coast is a peri-urban region that encompasses approximately 60 km (37 miles) of coastline and inland from Pelican Waters to Tewantin. The name Sunshine Coast was first used in December 1958 at the opening dinner of the Sunshine Coast branch of the Queensland Real Estate Institute, held at the Caloundra Hotel.

The most common land use in the area is grazing native vegetation, which covers 530 square kilometers or 17 percent of the region. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Sunshine Coast also became a popular destination for those seeking alternative lifestyles. The main rivers in this area are the Noosa River, Maroochy River, Mooloolah River, and Stanley River. The Sunshine Coast region is governed by the Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Shire Council.

After World War II, it became a popular vacation spot and surf destination. It is served by Sunshine Coast Airport, 10 km north of Maroochydore, although many tourists also arrive from Brisbane Airport, which is 100 km to the south. There are several stretches of uninterrupted beaches along the coast, from Sunshine Beach near Noosa to Coolum Beach (17 km (11 km) (11 km) (11 km) (11 km) (11 km)); Maroochydore—Mooloolaba stretch (5.6 km (3.5 miles)); and from Buddina, passing through the Caloundra business district, to Pelican Waters (22 km) (22 km (14 miles).
